Astro Star Quest 2012 / Astro 新秀大赛 2012 is a great show to watch. Some of the girls are really good looking. This year Astro has been repetitively emphasize it will not focus on looks be only on voice. One thing about Astro is that they never focus on looks, even in a beauty pageant.
The result ends up with a mixed variety of contestants. Will these contestants be marketable in the future? Only Astro can tell. In my humble opinion, packaging is everything in the entertainment business.
But I think Astro always seems to want to search for the best of the best, the finest, the greatest, and the all-in-one Superpack winner. They will argue that people like Eason Chan Yik-shun 陳奕迅 is ordinary looking but with great voice. Therefore he is successful. The problem is there is only one Eason Chan in this world. There are many more people with greater voice than Eason Chan got unnoticed in the industry. At the same time, there are even lots more people who look better than Eason Chan with less powerful voice making the whole entertainment industry really works and moves.
I guess that is the reason why Malaysia entertainment industry lacks pool of talents and didn’t really pick up for so many years. Yes, I’m talking about pool of talents, not a super-hero talent. Pool of talents means a large group of people who are good at singing (does not have to be the best of the best), and look easy enough for the market to accept and digest. With this, you can create an industry. When you have a real working industry, you can occasionally come out with some extraordinary super-talent people.
Simply put, if you run a country that has no schools, do you first build schools to create a pool of educated students, or do you focus on creating straight “As” students.
Ok back to the girls in Astro Star Quest 2012 / Astro 新秀大赛 2012. I’m only commenting on the girl’s contestants.
May 6, 2012 – Qualifying Round Selecting 20 Contestants from 50
Some of this year’s contestants are pretty good. In terms of good looks, one can easily identify the hottest girl in the group. She is known as Angel who dressed in purple dress with long hair and high heels from Sarawak. No, she was not chose but I think she deserves a chance.
May 13, 2012 – Elimination Round 1 - Group of 5
This initial round is spring cleaning round. Organizer will drop 4 contestants and down to only 16 left. The group of 20 will be divided to 4 groups each consisting 5 people to sing in a group. The 2 groups with the highest points will automatically qualify for next round.
Two groups get 76 points so they automatically qualify. The most exciting group has Jovin 陈柔君dressed in blue strips and Maxcy 叶美茜 in blue and red. They are the power girls! 10 contestants are already secured. From the remaining 10, the judges picked Nicole and Will as qualifier. The rest has some simple PK rounds and nothing interesting really happen here as the remaining contestants are not that exciting.

May 20, 2012 – Elimination Round 2 – Solo Competition
After the first elimination round of spring cleaning, this round is the first test of strength on the individual singers. They sing solo all by their own. The points they scored in this round basically ranks their competitiveness in the show.
The first to perform is Wee 陈汉伟 at 14 points. Next is Maxcy叶美茜. This pretty girls dressed in grey who sings really well got a surprising low 13 points. Nicole 赖淞凤who performs next get 16.5 points. Nicole is notably one of the best female singer in the group. JoA James 官有显 performs next and only gets 12.5 points. This is a good break for Maxcy, but she is still in a danger zone.

Chanice Tan Suat Fern 陈雪芬 performs next and gets 13.5 points. Chanice is a consistently great female singer but for from the contestants like Nicole. Melanie 謝美善 the rock type singer gets13 points, the same point as Maxcy. Maxcy has some breathing space.
Jovin 陈柔君dressed in black performed really well and gets 13.5 points. Jovin is 100% safe from elimination. Jovin is comparable to Chanice is skills and she looks really good on stage. Will 郑幸安performs next and get 15.5 points. Will is considered the best in the male category. Merilyn卢晓凤the bigger girl got17.5 points. She has the highest point. Better than Nicole.

Jerry 洪凌飞 performs and get 13 points. Good news for Maxcy. Next, is performed by a girl 何佩佩 and get only 11 points. Maxcy is 100% safe now. Bernard sings高泉铭and get 13 points. Sharon庄遂霖 gets 14 points. Yyin Ng 黃詩穎gets unbelievable 16 points. Somehow the judges favour her a bit.
There is two more contestants left. Two lowest points contestants will be eliminated. The lowest two are何佩佩 with 11 points and JoA James with 12.5 points. Oscar邬扬名performs and get 13 points. 何佩佩 is eliminated. Ivyn许艾文performs and get 17 points. JoA James is eliminated too.

After the 2ndeliminated round, 14 contestants are left. The top creams seems to be all female - Merilyn 卢晓凤, Ivyn 许艾文, Nicole 赖淞凤 and Yyin Ng 黃詩穎. The judges seem to like bigger contestants maybe because they naturally have more powerful voice. The reasonably safe group is mixed with Will 郑幸安, Wee 陈汉伟, Sharon 庄遂霖, Chanice Tan Suat Fern 陈雪芬and Jovin 陈柔君. They seem to be highly capable for advancing to top 8 positions. The boarder liners are Maxcy 叶美茜, Melanie 謝美善, Jerry 洪凌飞, Bernard 高泉铭and Oscar 邬扬名. They can be eliminated easily in the next 1-2 rounds.
May 27, 2012 – Elimination Round 3 – Duet
This round is based on duet singing but there are no group points. Points are assigned to individual contestants.
Duet 1
Oscar 邬扬名and Merilyn 卢晓凤. This seems to be a team of combining the best with the worst. Unfortunately, there is no chemistry at all. Oscar 邬扬名 gets 11.5 points and Merilyn 卢晓凤 gets 14 points. Total is 25.5 points.
Duet 2
Jovin 陈柔君and Jerry 洪凌飞. This is a team of above average combining with border liner. Jovin is better than frown face Jerry many times. But Jerry knows how to leverage on Jovin’s strength. He spends a week with her building chemistry. During the performance, they appeared to be very sweet couple. Jerry holds Jovin’s hand at all times. The both get 15 points each with a total of 30 solid points. Without Jovin, Jerry is will be on the verge of disqualifying. Jerry is one lucky contestant who gets to duet with Jovin. It also proves that Merilyn 卢晓凤 is not that strong after all.
Duet 3
Nicole 赖淞凤and Will 郑幸安. What can I say? They are the best of the best in the female and male category. Their combustion power brings 16 points each with total of 32 points.
Duet 4
Wee 陈汉伟and Yyin Ng 黃詩穎. This group is supposed to be rather safe. Yyin Ng is supposed to be very good. Wee is not bad too. But they only get 14 points each with a total of 28. It shows Yyin Ng is over-rated. Jovin seems to be doing a lot better than her in this round.
Duet 5
Chanice Tan Suat Fern 陈雪芬 and Melanie 謝美善. This is a clear group of Chanice helping Melanie, but the difference in strength is clear and obvious. Chanice gets 15 points and Melanie gets 12.5 points only with total of 27.5. Chanice is at the same level as Jovin. Melanie is now the 2nd lowest point.
Duet 5
Maxcy 叶美茜and Sharon 庄遂霖. This group seems to be a case of Sharon helping Maxcy. But, their duet performance lacks power with both getting 12 points each with a total of 24 points. This is so far the worst duet performance. Is Maxcy the problem? Is Sharon over-rated? We’ll soon find out. Melanie is safe due to their combination.
Duet 6
Ivyn 许艾文and Bernard 高泉铭. This is the last group. Ivyn is in a better position than Bernard. This is a very dangerous situation. Oscar 邬扬名 gets 11.5, the lowest. Maxcy 叶美茜 and Sharon 庄遂霖 gets 12 points each. Two contestants will be kicked out. Ivyn’s point is 15. That is on the same level with Jovin and Chanice. Oscar is already eliminated. Maxcy and Sharon are getting really for PK. If Bernard gets 11.5 or lower, Maxcy and Sharon are saved. If he gets 12 points, he will join them for PK. Bernard gets 13.5 points. So, the total is 28.5 points.

Now is the time for PK competition. The result is clear. Maxcy is better than Sharon many times. Sharon has been overrated. If Maxcy duets with other singers, the result may be better.

After this round of elimination there are only 12 contestants left.
Nicole 赖淞凤and Ivyn 许艾文seems to be doing a pretty good job, but Nicole is obviously better. Will 郑幸安has improved. Jovin 陈柔君and Chanice Tan 陈雪芬has always been at the same level, now they both jumped to higher chances. Jerry 洪凌飞on the verge of being eliminated is saved by the adorable Jovin. Merilyn 卢晓凤and Yyin Ng 黃詩穎 are proven to be not as good as the judges thought. Wee 陈汉伟 has always been there as an average contestant. Bernard 高泉铭, Melanie 謝美善, and Maxcy 叶美茜has been in the danger zone for way too long.
Nicole 赖淞凤and Will 郑幸安seems to be very capable for fighting the top spots. Ivyn 许艾文position is hard to judge. Chanice Tan 陈雪芬 and Jovin 陈柔君 seems to be very secure in getting into top 5. The next round will eliminate 2 contestants leaving only the final top 10. It looks like nothing is going to rock them away.
June 3, 2012 – Elimination Round 4 - Oldies
Nicole 赖淞凤
Yyin Ng 黃詩穎was the first to perform. Miraculously, she gets 14 points. How she gets it? Only the judges can tell. Wee 陈汉伟 gets 13 points. Not bad at all for his level. Chanice Tan 陈雪芬comes in and grabbed 15.5 points. The highest point so far. Bernard 高泉铭, the guy who has been in danger zone gets 12.5 points, the lowest up to now. Jovin 陈柔君comes out with her red hot dress and got 13.5 points, slightly moving away from Chanice Tan. Jovin is saved. Now, it is only between Wee and Bernard. Ivyn 许艾文gets 14 points. Not bad. Nicole 赖淞凤 scores 14.5, a very high score too. Will 郑幸安get 14 points, not bad!
Maxcy 叶美茜, the Queen of PK comes out. Wee 陈汉伟 is at 13 points and Bernard 高泉铭 is at 12.5 points, if Maxcy gets more than 13 points, she is safe. Maxcy did an amazing performance in her red dress and gets only 12.5 points. Wee is safe. Now it is between Maxcy and Bernard.
Merilyn 卢晓凤comes out and get 15.5 points due to her strong voice. Now, it is Jerry 洪凌飞turn. If he gets 12.5 point or lower, Maxcy can catch a small breath. After all, who wants to see Mr. Frown everyday? Afterall, if it is not because of Jovin, Jerry has already packed his bags. Jerry did 14.5 points! What the hell? That is even better than Jovin! Jovin must beware.
Maxcy has 12.5 points and Bernard has 12.5 points. If Melanie scores a bit higher, they’ll be packing bags. Luckily, Melanie got 12.5 points too. Now, Maxcy, Bernard and Melanie is going for PK. Only one of them will survive. Based on past performance, Melanie and Bernard seems to be doing better than Maxcy. With the judges trying to prove they don’t like pretty people, Maxcy is almost gurarantee to be knocked out. The result is a miracle. Maxcy puts in a performance so damn good that the judges have to pick her. Maxcy kicks out both Melanie and Bernard making her the undisputed PK Queen.

Let’s do some analysis on the top 10 finalist.
Chanice Tan 陈雪芬 has become better and better every round. She can be considered a top 3 material. Merilyn 卢晓凤 has some slim chance in top 5, but definitely not a top 3 contestants. Nicole 赖淞凤has been scoring As since the competition started. There is only one place to go, the champion. Jerry 洪凌飞 rise from nowhere from bad to good according to the judges. However, I don’t see any noticeable improvement at all. Jerry should not even be in the top 10 in the first place. Will 郑幸安 will be fighting with Nicole for the top spot. Ivyn 许艾文should be displayed before she reached the top 5. Yyin Ng 黃詩穎is actually a so-so average singer. It is difficult to see her advance more. Jovin 陈柔君is of course my personal favorite. On the performance level, I think she has been very consistent. I don’t think she can be in the top 3, but she deserves a top 5. She has been having a roller coaster ride results based on results given by the judges. Wee 陈汉伟has very little chances. To me, he is only a buffer for Jovin 陈柔君to advance into another round. Maxcy 叶美茜! I hope she survives. She is a real survivor. Maxcy 叶美茜can do really well then she is under pressure. If she can survive this round, having a top 5 spot is possible.
Because there are 7 females and 3 males now, Astro would probably take the opportunity to cut some female contestants just to balance things out. This would mean danger for Ivyn 许艾文, Yyin Ng 黃詩穎, Jovin 陈柔君, and Maxcy 叶美茜. Ivyn would eventually be out before she reaches top 5, but Astro will keep her for PR reasons. It is difficult to say for Yyin Ng as the judges seem to favor her since day one. Jovin 陈柔君 and Maxcy 叶美茜 are the type of contestant Astro loves to destroy at this point.
Here we go -
Chanice Tan 陈雪芬 stared fiercely and got 22.5 points. She is definitely a top 3 in the making. Jerry 洪凌飞 performs and get only 20.5 points. See, Jerry should not even be in the top 10. Merilyn 卢晓凤 performs and get only 20 points. Merilyn has been overrated by the judges all these while. It is really the time to see her go. Jovin 陈柔君 comes out with a different hair style and notable darker make up. That is not the gorgeous Jovin we used to see. Thanks to the invited Taiwan make up artist. So, Jovin 陈柔君 did her Stupid Cupid performance and get a surprisingly low 20.5 points. As a fan of Jovin 陈柔君, I am stressed to see this. Yyin Ng 黃詩穎 performs Summer of Love. She did really badly. We can’t even hear her voice and there is no rhythm at all. This is a really good opportunity to secure Jovin’s position. It is time to see her go with Merilyn, but surprise, the judges gave her 21 points for a song that cannot be heard. Jovin is losing hope. Here comes Wee 陈汉伟, Jovin’s fixed deposit. There is no way Wee can perform better than Jovin, but Wee got 21 points. It must have been the judge’s effort to keep the male contestants. Ivyn 许艾文 did well and get 22.5 points. Nicole 赖淞凤as usual get 24.5 as the highest points. Next to perform is Will 郑幸安. If he gets more than 20.5 points, Merilyn would go. He got 24 points and nailed the coffin for Merilyn.
Here comes the last contestant - Maxcy 叶美茜. This is the most stressed moment. Jovin 陈柔君 and Jerry 洪凌飞 both has 20.5 points. If Maxcy 叶美茜gets lower than 20.5 points, Jovin and Jerry will be safe. If she gets exactly 20.5 points, all there of them will have to compete and there is only one loser. If she gets more than 20.5 points, Jovin and Jerry will have to compete for PK.
In my mind, I don’t want Maxcy to lose. But more importantly, I don’t want Jovin to lose. I want to see her more on TV. I was hoping that Maxcy got the same point so that the three can compete and both Jovin and Maxcy kick Jerry out. This will be the most desirable result.
Maxcy performs and get 21 points! That is a great performance by Maxcy. Then, Jerry battles Jovin. Actually, there is no clear difference in their PK performance. The judges should get them to sing again for better evaluation. Anyway, they announce Jerry as the winner. They wanted to keep male contestants to balance the show. I’m really sad.
Actually, Jovin 陈柔君 has extremely high chance to advance to top 8. Wee 陈汉伟and Maxcy 叶美茜have always been performing way below Jovin’s level. Merilyn 卢晓凤’s bad performance gives Jovin an added level of security. Jerry has no match with Jovin. Since they are involved in PK, Jerry should give way. Yyin Ng 黃詩穎obvious poor performance should have points way below Jovin 陈柔君. All I can say about Jovin’s exit at this point is pure bad luck, bad evaluation from the judges, and probably manipulation attempt to balance the gender count. No, I am not saying Jovin should win the competition or be in the top 3, but she is more than qualify to be in top 8, and probably top 6.
The situation can be very fluid before Maxcy’s result announcement. Depends on Maxcy’s points, the end result could be any of these.

2. Maxcy qualify, Jovin battles Jerry. Jovin wins
3. Maxcy qualify, Jovin battles Jerry. Jerry wins
4. Maxcy gets the same points. Maxcy, Jovin and Jerry battle. Maxcy and Jovin wins
5. Maxcy gets the same points. Maxcy, Jovin and Jerry battle. Maxcy and Jerry wins
6. Maxcy gets the same points. Maxcy, Jovin and Jerry battle. Jovin and Jerry wins
In terms of probability there is a 67% chance for Jovin to move into top 8. In terms of capability, Maxcy and Jerry are slightly below Jovin. With bad performances coming from
Wee 陈汉伟, Merilyn 卢晓凤and Yyin Ng 黃詩穎there is really no reason for Jovin to miss the top 8 position.
