ICE STYLE.....ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2014 Costumes: Ladies, Pairs

Diamonds and Pink Panther: USA's Ashley Wagner (Ladies) and Germany's Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy (Pairs) at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2014, Saitama Japan

Last week--and weekend (beginning on March 24 and ending yesterday) was the final big international Figure Skating competition of the season--the 2014 ISU World Figure Skating Championships. This very important event in figure skating is usually a BIG deal, were it not for the fact that, well, the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics had just occurred last month.

So, needless to say, some of the "top stars" of figure skating decided to "skip it": Including Gold and Silver Medal winning Ice Dance teams Davis and White from the U.S., and Virtue and Moir from Canada. Ladies Gold Medalist from Russia Adelina Sotnikova and Silver Medalist Patrick Chan also did not attend. But there were still a lot of A-List skaters, making it a good competition. These 2014 World Championships occurred at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan to a very fan-tastic crowd (Gotta Luv Japan!).

Costume Change--Canada's Duhamel and Radford (Pairs)

Most the costumes the skaters wore were the same costumes they have been wearing throughout the season, but there were some "Costume Changes" including Canada's Pairs Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford who wore different costumes for their Short Program and Akiko Suzuki going back to a previous SP costume as well as some others...

So here's a photo recap of some of my fave Ladies and Pairs (plus some Costume Changes) from the 2014 ISU World Figure Skating Championships:

Akiko Suzuki of Japan, Short Program: Akiko wore this purple costume to her SP to "Hymme a L'Amour" by Marguerite Monnot. I've said before that it's A LOT, and maybe in need of applique editing. It's still a nice color for her. She DID NOT wear this to the Sochi Olympics for her Short Program and instead, she opted for this red costume...

Akiko at Sochi 2014 Short Program Costume: I liked this red costume much more. The neckline sequined beading is INCREDIBLE.

Carolina
Kostner of Italy
, Short Program to "Ave Maria" by Franz Schubert: The
sky blue colored costume featured a "plunging" neckline (in illusion)
with gorgeously strewn sequins throughout. It was beautiful, classic and
"Ice Princess" perfect. Her skate was almost like a religious
experience; the music, the skate, the costume...she seemed Angelic.

Mao Asada of Japan, Short Program to "Nocturne in E
flat major, Op. 9, No. 2" by Frederic Chopin
: I liked this lavender
costume from Asada; the front bust gathered drape was original and the
sweetheart neckline caviar beading looked expensive. I also appreciated the
ombre dying effect in her costume.

Julia Lipnitskaia of Russia Short Program to "You Don't Give Up on Love" by Mark Minkov: I thought this was a very nice costume for Julia and this program. I loved the deep violet blue and baby blue combination and the torso/bodice sequin work looked beautiful. My favorite detail of this costume were the back straps that were beautiful.

Gracie Gold of the U.S., Short Program to "Piano Concerto" by Edvard Grieg: The costume was designed by Gale Johnson and Denise Gold and I LOVE it! It's elegant, classic but with a sexy "red carpet" edge and also works really well with her music and program; it's like a "mini-me" gown one could see at a late 19th Century/early 20th Century Ball in Europe. The off-the-shoulder look seems very "Moulin Rouge"-like as well.

Ashley Wagner of the U.S, , Short Program to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd: The costume featured black stretch chiffon, double-layer "skirt" and panels with silver crystal trimmed details. I really liked this costume because it really reflected the theme of her music. I especially loved the various sizes of the jeweled crystals and how the neck detail looked like a built-in diamond necklace.

Juulia Turkkila of Finland, Short Program to "Firebird" by Igor Stravinski: I don't think I've ever commented on this costume for Juulia. So, here it goes: I think it's kinda fabulous! The colors are great and "Firebird" appropriate. Is it a bit "Cirque du Soleil"? Yes, and reminiscent of something I've seen at the Olympics Synchronized Swimming? Yep, that too. But I like it.

Joshi Helgesson of Sweden, Short Program to  "Mystere" and "Taiko" from Cirque du Soleil: Joshi wore a different costume than what she wore to this program back in the 2012-2013 Season (photo on the right at Trophee Eric Bompard 2012). I liked the change! It was subtle but good. The colors are vibrant and effective and instead of the "sweetheart" neckline,m she went for a one-shoulder silhouette. She did keep the "petal" skirt but changed the hem slightly.

Netta Schreiber of Israel, Short Program to "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck: I have never discussed Netta and so I thought it was fitting to talk about her and this jumpsuit. First off: it's rare to see a jumpsuit/bodysuit. Netta wore a stretch black one with deep lilac strap accents with silver crystals. This is interesting but more fitting for a "warm up". Just saying.

Pairs Costumes Highlights:

Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany, Short Program to Henry Manicini's soundtrack to "The Pink Panther". Aliona's costume featured a blindingly bright pink color and a silver crystal stripe down the top portion. Her boots were even covered in the same Lycra pink fabrication. I've discussed these costume many, many times and I just think they are fun, colorful and very, very effective. They have now become ICONIC. Seriously.

Savchenko and Szolkowy, Free Skate to "The Nutcracker" by Petr I. Tchaikovsky: Their costumes were visions of the "Sugar Plum Fairy" and the Nutcracker prince. They were a bit "Costume 101" in terms of their designs and execution. I would have loved something more refined and Couture-worthy. But it's hard to critique the 5 time World Champions!

Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov of Russia, Free Skate to Music from The Addams Family soundtrack by Marc Shaiman: While I appreciated the bold choices, I thought this was a confusing Pairs Costume look. Fedor looked very Gomez Adams "kooky" in his costume yet Ksenia looked as if she was skating to "Carmen". Her costume was so sleek and simple, as compared to his. For once, the MAN stood out more than the female and yet, it didn't work. And to add: there is NOTHING of Morticia Adams in her look. I did like how elegant and clean her costume looked, but it was for a different skate.

Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay of the USA--Short Program and Free Dance: Between these two costumes, I liked the Free Dance to Music from Les Miserables by Claude-Michel Schonberg (right). The costumes designed by Dawn Imperatore and James Peterson. These costumes were very "Les Miserables" and unless you were in a COMA you would obviously recognize that. Their Short Program costumes to "Carousel Waltz" to Rodgers and Hammerstein (left) was "Ehhh". Zhang's pink "heart" applique costume looked too "Todlers & Tiaras" and his looked like what a guy would have worn in 1998 at a dance club.

Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford of Canada, Short Program to "Tribute" by Eric Radford. Eric wrote this music and in terms of their costumes, they changed (Thanksss Godsss!) In past competitions, they had worn the ones on the right; to begin, Eric's was a bit of a yawn but on a plus side, it fit him very snugly showing off his very athletic build. Meagan, on the other hand (and Thank Goodness) wore a softly draped cowl front, fluttery skirt and sequined torso with a very unfortunate hairstyle. All this changed for what they wore for last week's 2014 ISU World Figure Skating Championships. She wore a silver costume that showed off her very toned arms and his was an all-black look. Which one do you guys liked best?

Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres, Short Program to Minnie the Moocher by Cab Calloway, Jumpin' Jack by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy: These costumes were a Costume Change from what they had worn at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Above is the "new" costumes. James wore a red with black trim halter costume and Cipres donned a silver and black sequined plunging neckline long sleeve shirt with black pants. These costumes were a Costume Change from what they had worn at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics:

Purple Queen and "Jazzy Vest" King...Which ones do you guys like the best?  I am definitely a fan of the new costumes worn at Worlds. Red for Vanessa and plunging for Morgan...a hard combination to beat!

**Next Up: The 2014 ISU World Figure Skating Costumes--The MEN and ICE DANCE!

Vanessa Wong Winner of Ardeca Brand Ambassador Angels 2014 (Ardeca Lubricants Singapore)

Vanessa Wong Winner of Ardeca Brand Ambassador Angels 2014 (Ardeca Lubricants Singapore)

Riko Chan    94

Throughout the voting period the top 4 positions were being dominated by Vanessa Wong, Miki Ace, Rei Rei and Sophia Lee. There were four quarter period.

In the first quarter, Sophia Lee was the clear leader, separating herself from the rest of the pack. But Rei Rei was growing strong.

In the second quarter, Rei Rei exceeded Sophia Lee. Sophia seems to be experiencing slower but stable growth. Although still below Sophie, Vanessa Wong and Miki Ace were getting very close votes.

By the third quarter, the situation was clear. Sophia Lee is no longer in top 3. Vanessa Wong has gained the number one spot, far exceeding Rei Rei and Miki Ace. Vanessa Wong was surely going to be the undisputed winner. The only question left is who is going to be the number 2 between Rei Rei and Miki Ace. Rei Rei has always been leading Miki Ace.

At the last quarter, without a doubt, Vanessa Wong became the clear winner. The biggest surprise was Miki Ace overtook Rei Rei at the very last moment to become the number 2.

The Most Beautiful: The Top Seven of the Binibining Pilipinas 2014 (Miss Philippines 2014), including the Winner, Mary Jean Lastimosa (Center) who will represent the Philippines in this year's Miss Universe 2014 pageant

Last night was the Live Televised Finals Coronation Night of the Binibining Pilipinas (Bb Pilipinas) 2014 Beauty Pageant--the country's top beauty pageant which chooses it's representative for Miss Universe, Miss Intercontinental, Miss Supranational, Miss Tourism and Miss International. The finals occurred in the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City Philippines. The representative for the Miss World is done through a separate pageant and separate pageant directors who own the "Miss World Philippines" rights.

Cougar Winner: Forty contestants representing all of the Philippines competed for the top crown and the winner was 25 year-old Mary Jean Lastimosa (No. 25) of Filipino-Arab descent. The 5' 7" (1.70 M) tall beauty will now be the representative for this year's Miss Universe pageant. Maria Jose is not a stranger to pageants and the Binibining Pilipinas pageant...

Third Time's The Charm: She competed in 2011 and 2012--getting the 2nd Runner-Up title in 2011 and Top 12 the following year. She skipped last year's pageant and instead traveled to Brazil for more pageant training and visited family in the USA. But she returned this year, ready to win. And she did.

Mary Jean Lastimosa "No. 25", the new Binibining Pilipinas/Miss Philippines Universe 2014 during the Swimsuit Competition last night at Smart Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City Philippines

Queens: Prior to the Final Coronation Night, there was a special "Miss Universe Cocktail Party"  where several Filipina beauty queens as well as Venezuela's Gabriela Isler Miss Universe 2013 attended--(left to right) Miss Universe 2010 4th Runner-Up Venus Raj, Miss Universe 2013 3rd Runner-Up Arielle Arida, Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler, Miss International 2013 Bea Rose Santiago and Miss Supranational 2013 Mutya Johanna Datul

Best in National Costume: This title went to "No. 13" Kris Janson. She wore an ivory gown created by fashion designer Cary Santiago. The gown was inspired by the sampaquita flower, which represents purity. The design--featuring the famous Filipino "Butterfly" sleeves, is a modern take on the terno, it had a over-gown that was full, while underneath was a more fitted lace column silhouette. To finish the look, Kris carried an ivory lace umbrella.

The Evening Gowns--Finalists/Top 15:

The final gowns were a mix of lots of pastel and very bright colors--baby blue, coral, lipstick red, golden champagne and fuchsia were predominant. The styles were very "Pageant Betty" and nothing too Haute Couture/High Fashion runway-like; it was like a fashion show for a top "Pageant & Prom" dress manufacturer. I would have loved to have seen amazing COUTURE-worthy "Red Carpet" gowns but I guess this wasn't the year for that.

The Top Seven:

Bubble Gum Pink Winner: Mary Jean Lastimosa wore a fuchsia colored strapless gown  in satin and tulle with a slight "Mermaid" silhouette. the gown featured lots of silver sequin accents. It looked a little polyester-y for my taste and the long exaggerated earrings weren't necessary. However, I did like her clean, side swept hairstyle.

Best in Gown Prize: went to "No. 22" Marie Anne Bianca Giudotti, who also got the second top honor of Miss Binibining Pilipinas/Miss International 2014. Her gown was a sequined violet-colored one-shoulder gown with sheer panels asymmetrically placed throughout her torso and framed by silver diamantes. It was A LOT, and very "Figure Skating Costume" fab. She also gave me "Cher" circa 1978 (the hair, the look, the Bob Mackie-like dress). And I love that.

No. 13 Kris Janson (who won "Best National Costume") and won the title of Binibining Pilipinas/Miss Intercontinental 2014 (left) wore a pretty coral colored gown in sequins, illusion and crepe. The top portion was very 'Figure Skating Ice Princess" (Is this a Theme?), but I do like the clean fit-and-flare gown-skirt and her hair and makeup. Her drop earring worked well here with that hair style.

No. 35 Yvethe Marie Santiago won the title of Binibining Pilipinas/Miss Supranational 2014 (right). She wore a baby blue gown with a sequined bodice and chiffon A-line full skirt. She looked very pretty and "Prom Perfect".

No. 4 Parul Shah (left) got the title of Binibing Pilipinas/Miss Tourism 2014. I think she was one of the best in gown. She looked elegant, Pageant-right and I thought the reflective mirrored paillettes in her strapless gown provided the right amount of razzle dazzle.

No. 11 Laura Victoria Lehmann (right): Laura got the "1st Runner-Up" title. She wore a rose colored gown with sequined applique bustier and chiffon full skirt. This dress was "Prom 101", nothing Couture "earth shaking" about it. She looked very "Sweet Sixteen". Not sure if this is good enough for such an "international" stage. I want to see beyond "Sweet 16" and more "Paris Couture"!

No. 27 Hannah Ruth Sison: Rounding out the Top Seven was Hannah, who got the "2nd Runner-Up" title and for her gown choice, she wore a white chiffon and satin gown with sequined "sweetheart" neckline. She looked pretty. Her hair was elegant and the earring appropriate for the entire look. It was still rather safe.

The Rest of the 15 Semi-Finalists in Gown:

No. 1 Julian Aurine Flores (left): Julian wore a pink-red gown in poly chiffon with silver sequin applique at the empire waist. Very "Prom & Pageant" basic.

No. 3 Joana Angelica Romero (right): Joana wore a gathered bust lavender chiffon gown with corseted boned bodice/midriff. Nice color, interesting gown.

No. 8 Pia Wurtzbach (left): Pia wore a creme gown that featured a ruched bodice and torso and full flared below-the-knee skirt section. It also had sequined straps. She looked quite pretty and almost like a "Trophy Girl" at like the Golden Globes.

No. 14 Emma Marie Tiglao (right): Emma wore a baby blue ruched chiffon gown with silver sequined bodice accents and straps. It fit her well and looked pretty, but one could find this style in EVERY Pageant shop.

No. 16 Zahara Mae Soriano (left): Zahara wore a very elegant bright red strapless gown with waist-cinching band and silver sequined neckline and torso detail. Her entire look was very "Pageant Perfect"; there was nothing out of place or wrong--from the hair, to the earrings to the gown and wrist bangle. She was "done", as they say.

No. 19 Mae Liezel Ramos (right): Mae wore a deep lavender gown with gathered bust and midriff and sheer illusion and sequined neck section. This was quite nice on her and I loved how clean-and-modern her center part hairstyle and makeup looked. This was a "modern" pageant girl.

No. 20 Kenneth Santiago (left): Kenneth wore an iridescent organza baby blue gown which featured an inner "mini dress" and crystals throughout. She looked great!

No. 23 Nichole Marie Manalo (right):  Nichole was probably one of the most "Diva"-like participants in the evening gown portion. We've seen this style of gown before--at many pageants--but Nichole looked very elegant and regal in this one shoulder red and sequined dress. It was dramatic and entrance-making.
